I live in a single family home. I had to move my mother in with me due to her lease being up during the covi-19. We have been unable to find a new place for because of the coco-19 which has caused our area to be closed to a number of months. Our Realitor was closed as well as any office businesses for apt complexes. Because I had to move in my mother, I am now living between two homes due to the lack of space in my single family, already over crowded home...

Palm Health Foundation began collecting personal stories from community residents in 2018 in order to better understand the communities, connect youth with their local history, give communities a voice, and develop activities to improve health and well-being. Recognizing the complex web of factors that influence health outcomes, the foundation used the SenseMaker® tool and methodology. The tool allowed residents to play a central role in assessing, evaluating, and responding to the challenges in their neighborhoods.

My parents didn’t make enough income to provide us with our wants, but we were just thankful that my parents were able to provide us with a home, food and clothing. For school I remember being bullied because I wore a lot of hand me downs and not being vocal or tough. Also, we did not have transportation for school so I would walk and get to school sweaty. Yes, we struggled but our parents taught us the best moral which was to finish school and keep thriving no matter what obstacles came my way...

Can stories and SenseMaker data gathered from local elders and residents help youth in Delray, Boynton and the Glades think differently about the future of their communities?  This project marked Palm Health Foundation’s first use of SenseMaker as tool for giving communities a voice and data leading to new ideas.

Mini-grants are funds for small nonprofits and individuals to support healthy eating, physical activity, and access to care among Palm Beach County residents. Healthier Together provides mentoring and grantwriting workshops as well as a platform to network and collaborate.

How We Help

By sharing their voice, community members have confirmed what Palm Health Foundation already knew, that many experience a lack of access to healthy food, safe spaces to walk outside, reliable transportation, and a multitude of other challenges that contribute to poor health outcomes.

After hearing their stories, Palm Health Foundation established The Neighbors Helping Neighbors Fund to assist our community’s most vulnerable residents. This fund puts small grants directly into the hands of residents who are struggling to pay their rent, access food, receive medical treatment and more. This fund will aid in efforts to help our neighbors recover, rebuild and plan for the future. Learn More

Delray Beach native Charlene Farrington is on a mission to share the history of Palm Beach County’s Black communities with residents young and old. As the executive director of the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum in Delray Beach, she oversees programming that seeks not only to present this information in an effective manner, but to preserve it for future generations and use it as a teaching tool to promote understanding, equity, and unity.
